    Figuring Stuff Out Thread

Is this OK to say? Or at least grammatically correct?

"Forgetting the past, you speak about this."
"Забывая прошлое, Вы говорите об этом"

Seeing as the English sentence is a bit akward as well, the Russian one looks nice to me.

"Forgetting the past, you speak about this."

    The English sentence is ok.

Когда вы забываете прошлое - вы об этом говорите.

English sentence is ok, "the past" is implied by "this", thst's obvious.

Забывая прошлое, вы говорите о нем.

    or

Забывая прошлое, вы говорите о последнем. less used

    or

Когда вы забываете поршлое - вы об этом говорите.
I'm not sure I will ever able to guess that "this" implies "the past" here I thought "this" refers to something out of context, so the English and Russian sentences seemed to me as master Yodo's upside-down speech In other words, I thought the Russian variant should be "Вы говорите об этом, забывая прошлое" (i.e. "Вы не должны говорить об этом. Или вы забыли прошлое?")
My English isn't so good, зато с русским все в порядке ))
I'll be very thankful, if you correct my mistakes.

ok, I left the last one only, while we need DDT's elaboration on that "this".
"this" as "the past" or "this" as "forgetting the past". But in engliss I find grammar structures of that kind everywhere.

Three card brag is a simple form of pocker. You get three cards only. And these you can't change.

(Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels)

With my Russian mentality I wolud defenitely say "And you can't change any (of them)". Godness' nose that English.

Whether you realize it or not you have all answered my questions. Thanks.

Also, "this" implies the topic of the conversation between two people that would have been metioned in the previous sentence by the first speaker.

I must admit that it does sound a little Master Yodaish! But I think that the occasion arises to speak in this fashion at times.
