    Negated reflexive verbs

    Hello.

    Can you write
Людей не покупается, хоть они и нанимаются.

I'm mostly concerned with the case for the word люди and the number agreement for покупаться.

    Thanks.

What I'm trying to understand is when should the logical subject of a negated reflexive verb be put in the genitive case.

    The sentence is completely unclear...
In Russian, all nationalities and their corresponding languages start with a lower-case letter.

Hmm... May be you want to say: «Люди не покупаются, хоть они и нанимаются»?

The form you wrote may be used for a number of людей: «Ежегодно большое количество людей покупаются на уловки мошенников», «Вы можете дать взятку чиновнику, но некоторое количество людей в стране не покупается ни за какие деньги».

are you trying to say "you can't buy people but you can rent them?"
Кому - нары, кому - Канары.

    Yes.

    I know you say:
    Осадков не предвидится.

This does not sound illogical to me but I do not know why this is so. I see there is no rule such as "The negated subject of a reflexive verb is to be put in the genitive case" so how is it?

    Re: Negated reflexive verbs

    Осадков не предвидится?

Yes, we say that. You may also say «На этой планете людей/животных/мусора не найдено». You see, this is completely passive («Я убью всех этих людей»).

In you example («людей не покупается») it is active. I know, this sounds strange, but in Russian language люди (men) покупаются самостоятельно (позволяют себя купить).

See also examples from my previous message: «Вы можете дать взятку чиновнику, но некоторое количество людей в стране не покупается ни за какие деньги». It looks like it become passive voice only when there are number of them.

In fact, I can't explain this.

    Re: Negated reflexive verbs

STOP! I know what is happening here!

It is just different падеж (grammatical case) here:
    не предвидится кого/чего? Осадков
предвидится кто/что? Катастрофа (множественное число: предвидятся кто/что? Осадки)
You see, that negation changes grammatical case here.

не покупается кто/что? Человек (множественное число: не покупаются кто/что? Люди)
Negation changes nothing here: человек покупается, люди покупаются.

You just need to remember this.

So what does that mean? To me, the sentence has no sense, either.

P.S. Okay, I've re-read it some times, and now I see some sense in it.
But it looks rather like a word play of some kind.

Звучит странно, так как мы привыкли, что слово «нанимаются» — это действие со стороны людей. Но в данном контексте (учитывая, что они покупаются, как вещи) — это действие со стороны работодателя по отношению к людям: «люди нанимаются работодателем, но люди не покупаются им».

    Re: Negated reflexive verbs

Вообще-то в данном примере люди не покупаются, а продаются. Verb "купиться" when applied to человеку/людям has completely different meaning.

This phrase should be formulated like: "людей нельзя купить, но можно нанять".

I like this reason. Looks like reflexive verbs work differently with animate and inanimate nouns.

Таких вещей не случается. - OK
Такие вещи не случаются. - OK
Таких вещей не бывает. - OK

Таких людей не встречается. - Wrong
Такие люди не встречаются. - OK
Таких людей не бывает. - OK

See also examples from my previous message: «Вы можете дать взятку чиновнику, но некоторое количество людей в стране не покупается ни за какие деньги». It looks like it become passive voice only when there are number of them.
No. "количество ... не покупается "
"Россия для русских" - это неправильно. Остальные-то чем лучше?

Да, ты прав. Вообще, у меня шифер снесло от этой фразы. Не знаю, что и думать.

Всё же я считаю, что люди могут покупаться (в смысле «продаваться»). Например, «рабы покупаются для того, чтобы выполнять работу».

Угу, ядреная фраза. Я добавил примеры в свой предыдущий пост, можешь помедитировать.

As other members have said, your sentence sounds grammaticaly incorrect. And I would also say "Людей нельзя купить."

Можно купить кровать, но не сон. Можно купить часы, но не время. Можно купить книгу, но не знания. Секс, но не любовь. Связи, но не друзей.

you can do - можно сделать что-либо (it is possible)
you cannot do - нельзя сделать что-либо

Obviously, it's different cases. Zubr asked why they are different.

There have been several threads about genitive in negation here. I don't remember what were found there. I remember only that it's rather complex topic.

    Re: Negated reflexive verbs

The text about transitive and reflexive verbs was wrong. So I deleted it.

Excuse me for breaking in, but if you don't mind:
[quote:m27mv1ea]Ежегодно большое количество людей покупаЕтся на уловки мошенников
"Количество" is the subject and a noun in the singular number. And also with the example of "не покупается":
но некоторое количество людей в стране не покупается ни за какие деньги
    [/quote:m27mv1ea]
Please correct any mistake you see in my message. Thank you in advance!

By the way, about "предвидеться". People generally say it about inanimate objects. I think, "предвидеться" in its literal meaning (to forecast oneself - about a thing) is nonsense . Maybe, that is why this verb is transitive.
I don't understand what you are talking about. "Предвидеться" is intransitive.

I know that most reflexive verbs are intransitive
    They are all intransitive.

If I am wrong, please correct me:
if the "предвидеться" were intransitive than the sentence would have been written as
    "Осадки не предвидятся".

Lae, transitive verbs are verbs which require (or allow) the accusative case after them. "Осадков не предвидится" is absolutely another instance. And I'm sure you know yourself that "осадков" is in the genitive there.

    Re: Negated reflexive verbs

    Hello!
I think my russian colleagues are carried away a bit.
I'm going back to the beginning.

Людей не покупается, хоть они и нанимаются. The only mistakes here are the ending of the word Людей (You have to say Люди) and the suffix of the word покупается (You have to say покупаются).

Люди не покупаются (People are not buyable; People could not be the subject of buying).
Хоть они и нанимаются or хоть они и могут быть нанятыми (Though they could be employed/hired).

The sentence is not common but it is acceptable in my opinion (but I can't assure you that it is grammatical because I have no the proper education).

Люди не покупаются; Доброе имя не покупается; Мечта не покупается etc.

Somedody told that it is not a passive form but I bet it is.
