    Expressing age of a person

    How old is his father?
    Сколько лет его отцу?
    Can one say "сколько лет ему отцу" instead, as the person is supposed to be in the dative case?

    No, you can't.
    The noun (the person) is in the dative case, but the word, which describes it, is not and should not:
    его отец
    его отца
    его отцу
    его отца
    его отцом
    о его отце

    "Его" is not an adjective, so it shouldn't change.
    In Russian, all nationalities and their corresponding languages start with a lower-case letter.
