You do use the genitive case, but you only need to put the word «Россия» into the genitive:
У меня есть друг, он из России.
(Also remember, even if «он» was in the genitive, it would be spelt «его» not «ево»!)

Братьев is the genitive plural of брат.
У меня нет брата = I don't have a brother
У меня нет братьев = I don't have any brothers.
