I think that the fact on google one form of a word is ten time more common than the other, means that it is more favoured in writing in the everyday context, as at the end of the day, normal Russians are writing more than Tolstoy and Dostoyevski.

AFAIK, there is a grammatical rule which says that the ending "-ee" is preferable. We write -ее according this rule, but often pronounce -ей. There is no difference in meaning between these variants.

So the answer to the original question: in writing use -ее, in speech you can use either variant.

Полуношник, извини, но я не собираюсь этого делать. А то получается, что писать "сильней" так же недопустимо, как и "асвальт", например. Конечно, твоё сообщение предназначалось не мне, но правила ведь для всех одинаковы?)

Я не говорил, что писать -ей нельзя. Просто со школьных лет у меня осталось смутное воспоминание, что предпочтительнее писать -ее.

В устной речи разницы никакой, но на письме, особенно, в официальных документах, -ей недопустимо.

Насчёт официальных документов соглашусь. То есть дело не в том, письменная речь или устная, а в стиле.
