    тоже versus также

    I can't seem to get a hold on these 2 words. Тоже и также.

    Когда ты используешь тоже, и когда используешь также?
    (When do you use "тоже" and when "также"?).
    Пожалуйста, исправте мои ошибки, спасибо.

    Также = also
    Тоже = too

    "Также" is a word of a formal style (mostly).
    "Тоже" is more colloquial.

    Don't mix up "также" (also) with "так же" (~the same way).
    Don't mix up "тоже" (too) with "то же" (the same).

    Thanks for pointing out the last 2 differences. No wonder I was confused earlier. It's like having 4 words for 2.

    Думаешь, tohca этого не знает? Тема, вообще-то, про "тоже" и "также", а не про too.

    shadow1, не обращай внимания, ничего страшного в том, что ты это написал(а), нет. Мы знаем, ты никого не хотел(а) обидеть. Всё забываю спросить, ты парень или девушка?

    I think one of the difficulties for me is that the words too and also are quite often used interchangeably, without much difference in meaning. For example, "can I have this too?" and "can I have this also?" But Оля did explain that the word "также" is used in a more formal sense.

    Then forget about также for some time.
    Mind that not always is possible to begin the sentence with 'тоже' (in this meaning).

    Some people using тоже stick with English word order when they translate such sentences:
    Nina runs a catering company. Also, she plans parties.
    But Тоже она устраивает вечеринки sounds very bad. We don't say so.
    Также она организовывает вечеринки is ok (without any commas!).

    Sometimes, when you use 'also' in addition to something else that you have mentioned, you can translate 'also' as 'ещё':
    Ещё она организовывает вечеринки.

    I'm not quite satisfied with that explanation, because in English "also" and "too" are basically interchangeable in normal conversation. Yet, in Russian, it seems that one is right and one is wrong, depending on the situation.

    I could be wrong (please correct me if I am), but I keep them straight by focusing on the TO and TAK aspect. That is, the part of speech reflected by each.

    For example, I use тоже when I use "also" referring to a person or thing, and I use также when I use "also" in relation to an action or something abstract.

    Note the difference:

    Мы также рады предложить вам свои услуги...
    Referring to the action separate from another action. Trans: "We are also pleased to offer our services..."

    Мы тоже рады предложить вам свои услуги...
    Referring to the subject (мы) separate from some other subject. Trans: "We, also, are pleased to offer our services..."
    That is, as opposed to somebody else.

    Does that make sense?
    "Сейчас без языка нельзя... из тебя шапку сделают..."

    He's joking, I think, Lampada.

    Nobody older than 8 calls somebody else "smartie pants" and is serious.

    Yes, you are right.
    In Russian, all nationalities and their corresponding languages start with a lower-case letter.
