I'm trying to get the sense of this. Is it dismissive, meaning "the heck with him" or gentle, meaning something like "never mind him."
    thanks

    sooner the second
Let him go - God will care about him, let the God judge his virtues and sins, something like that.
In general it means simply "let's forget that\him".

We Americans often use "to hell with him/her/it" in that sense. That's probably confusing to some foreigners. "To hell with him/her/it" can be used in a very angry sense, or in a very watered-down sense. For instance:

“Do you want to go with me to see “Wolverine”?”
“I really shouldn't. I've got a ton of homework. Oh, to hell with it. I can do the homework tomorrow. I'd rather go to the movie.”

So in terms of emotional effect, I think “Бог с ним” is often best translated as “to hell with him.”

Don, I suspect, that there is another Russian expression for this case - "чёрт с ним!"

    Yes, "бог/господь с кем-л./чем-л." is gentle.
    All other variants imply annoyance.

In general I agree, but there are some people who are just used to say "чёрт с ним" every time, even without any annoyance.

Do you mean that it is acceptable to say “to hell with him” "при бабушке"? (BTW: in English is it "in front of grandma"?)

Да нет, я при бабушках (царство им небесное) ни разу не сказал “to hell with him”, а “to heck with him” иногда.

Да, “in front of Grandma” лучший перевод.
