    Accusative.
    In Russian, all nationalities and their corresponding languages start with a lower-case letter.

    Accusative.
    Is the word animate ? What is the ending of an accusative a "Я".
    The most common endings are У and ю.

    It's accusative plural.
    Of course the word isn't animate.

    It's plural and inanimate and therefore doesn't change its ending. "Classes"

    Can people please give better explanations.

    -------------------------

    занятие = lesson / class.

    Nouns that end -ие are neuter.

    The nominative plural of neuter nouns that end -ие is -ия.

    занятие - lesson
    занятия - lessons

    The accusative of neuter nouns is identical in form to the nominative, so
    занятия is also the accusative plural form of the noun.

    The У / Ю ending is for FEMININE nouns in the accusative.

    For neuter nouns, accusative and nominative always coincide

    For neuter nouns, accusative and nominative always coincide and have always coincided, moreover. This simple rule apply for all Indo-European languages in which nominative and accusative still happen to differ (Russian, German, Greek, Latin). Nouns having different accusative and nominative forms fall into either Masculine or Feminine gender.
