    Translation - "Нахал"

Could somebody please check over this bit of translation that I did. It's the opening to a story called Нахал (found here)

    The Jerk

There were seven minutes until the new year. There was still time to say goodbye to the old year. Everyone picked up their wine glasses, and right at that moment, the door bell rung.
“It’s Edik and Rudik,” announced the head of the house, Alik, to the guests, and looked at his cup as if while deciding for himself what to do first: finish drinking first and then meet the guests, or allow them to come into the house, and then sit down and quietly drink his drink.
The waiting guests looked at Alik, the head of the house, ready to hear his favorite saying.
    “Just a second,” apologized Alik.
His answer to the problem benifited the guests, and darted off to the main entrance.
Soon he returned with Edik, but without Rudik.
Alik and Edik stood in the doorway awkwardly and looked at the crowd with a face, as if they had mixed up apartments and were seeing everyone for the first time.
“Rudik was hit by a car,” said Alik.
Everyone noisily let out a sigh and held their breath. Everyone’s face also froze, their eyes were hardly open, and their mouth hardly half open. It continued for a minute or two. Maybe five.

    Thanks

I would translate 'все подняли рюмки' by 'everybody raised his glass'. Румка is not necessarily a wine glass but just a glass, a stemmed glass from which you drink wine/champage/etc.

'... сообщил гостям хозяин дома.' would be '... announced the host/master of the house to the guests.'

a wine or champage glass would be бокал. рюмка is a shot glass

Actually рюмка is a goblet. A liqueur glass. Not necessarily a shot glass...
