Thread: Short sentence about traffic

Hi

How do I say this, correctly:

I was walking in the street towards the metro station. Suddenly I saw an old woman crossing the road. She didn't see the lorry driving to the junction.

in Russian?

I have:

Ходивший по улице в метро станцию. Вдруг я увидел старую женщину переходившую улицу. Она не увидела грузовик ехавший в перекрёсток.

Я шёл по улице на станцию метро. Вдруг я увидел, как старушка переходит дорогу. Она не заметила, что к перекрёстку ехал/приближался грузовик. Something like that, I'd personally combine the last 2 sentences into one for style, but that's not necessary.

Obviously you are trying to learn причастия! The truth is that your sentence does not sound at all natural. I don't know whether is correct or not!

Идя по улице к станции метро, я неожиданно увидел пожилую женщину, переходящую/переходившую улицу. Она не заметила приближающийся/приближавшийся к перекрёстку грузовик.

Идя is used rarely.

Я шёл по улице в сторону станции метро, когда вдруг заметил старушку, переходящую дорогу. Она не видела грузовик, подъезжающий к перекрёстку.

The к + dat construction is new to me. Can I ask; why not В + acc in this case since it is motion towards?

к treats its object like more of a standing(vertical) unit with presence (most commonly it's a person), whereas в is something with an interior, and на is something with a surface generally (neither usually a person).
к перекрёстку gives the idea of "up to" the edges of the crossroads as opposed to into it.

Also, the list of prefixes explains how certain verbs will correspond to certain prepositions.
