i think this phrase implies that the person you say it to has some personal defects
sounds to me almost like "yes, i know you are not that good and that thing you did yesterday was afwul, but i love you anyway"

May be a better thing to say would be "я люблю тебя зато что ты есть/спасибо за то что ты есть( ya lublu tebya za to chto tu est'/spasibo za to chto tu est') as Friendy has already suggested.
