Help translating English into Russian, please!!

Hi, i've got to do a presentation about my mother and would really appreicate a bit of help translating some English into Russian! There are a few things i'm a bit unsure of! I would be so grateful for any help!

    1. She likes her job and is always thinking of new ways to teach her pupils. She often plays her accordian in school and sings songs in French. Her pupils love her because she is kind, patient and fun!

    2. My mum has had a varied and exciting life. When she finished studying French and Italian at Leeds University she hitch-hiked around Europe. She travelled to many countries before settling in France. She was very poor and lived in a slum without hot water or heating. She did not eat desert for eight years so she could save up to buy a house! But, she didn't mind because she had amazing friends.

    3. Eventually, she returned to England and married my dad, Robert. They were married for 20 years but are now divorced. They had 3 children, myself, my brother and my sister.

    4. We had lots of fun with mum during our childhood because she never minded if we made a mess or were noisy. We were allowed to dig holes in the garden and do lots of artwork! She also took us to visit interesting sights like castles and museums. She always encouraged us to focus on what we enjoyed. Myself and my siblings have grown up into individual people with different interests and talents.

    5. My mum is a calm and liberal person. She enjoys working in the garden and doing home improvements. She is good at using drills, saws and hammers! Her main love, however, is poetry. She attends two poetry groups every week and is always writing. She writes about life, love, and various other topics. She has been highly commended in several prestigious poetry competitions. She dreams that one day she will have time to write a novel.

    6. I have an excellent relationship with my mother and speak to her often. I hope that when i become a mother, i will give my children the fantastic upbringing that i have been lucky enough to receive.

If anyone could help me with this i'd be eternally grateful! I've written a rough version but i'm pretty sure i've made a few mistakes! Unfortunately i don't know any native Russian speakers to help me!

    Thank you, Sylvia

Sylvia, you should post your version, and there will be plenty of people to correct it. There is more than one way to say the same thing, and the translation should be as close as possible to your understanding of how it is supposed to sound. Not to mention the fact that you will learn something in the process.

Me either. And still I can write in Cyrillic. Every Windows version has "a cyrillic keyboard" in it.

Go to Start --> Settings(?) --> Control Panel --> Languages and add Russian language to your computer. Then you can switch between English and Russian with ctrl+shift or alt+shift combination. Also, you will need Russian stickers for your keyboard. That's how ours usually look:

To answer your question, correcting Russian text written in Latin letters is quite difficult and not useful for the learner, I believe.

Re: Help translating English into Russian, please!!

thanks for that! will come in very handy!

    here's my attempt:

i hope it makes some sort of sense! i know there's probably millions of mistakes but any corrections would be appreciated!

    "Возвратилась" is okay too.

"Женилась на моем папе" is wrong. A woman can't жениться, she only can выйти замуж. So it should be: и вышла замуж за моего папу.

    [s:cn9hyaew]мы[/s:cn9hyaew] я с братом и сестрой
I do not see anything wrong in "мы с братом и сестрой".

"Не" всегда пишется отдельно от глагола.

Нам позволяли рыть ямы в саду и заниматься различными видами искусств!
I don't think "do lots of artwork in the garden" means "заниматься различными видами искусств" (and it doesn't sound good here, anyway). Maybe it's "лепить разные скульптуры"?...

    Мы с братом и сестрой превратились в [s:cn9hyaew]характерый[/s:cn9hyaew] индивидуальных [s:cn9hyaew]людей[/s:cn9hyaew] личностей с различными интересами и талантами.
"Индивидуальная личность" sounds strange. I think it could be "самостоятельная личность". Ot maybe "яркая индивидуальность".
Also, "мы выросли в" is much better than "мы превратились в" here.

So, the artwork is not connected with the holes or the garden.

All other corrections are very helpful. Especially with "женилась" .

They are connected, since they exist in the same sentence. The whole story context, however, does not tell us anything about "arts" like painting, playing violin, or something else.

Re: Help translating English into Russian, please!!

I'd like to add a few corrections. I'll take CoffeeCup's version as an example, because most of the grammatical issues were addressed there and i'll have to do less work. I hope you don't mind.

Она любит свою профессию и всегда думает о новых методах преподавания для своих учеников.
Она любит свою профессию и всегда думает о новых методах преподавания. ("для своих учеников" doesn't make the sentence pretty, and since it's rather redundant, you can omit it altogether)

Она часто играет на своем аккордеоне в школе и поет песни на французском языке.
В школе она часто играет на _ аккордеоне и поёт песни на французском языке. (adding "своём" or "её" here is not necessary, and in some cases may sound as a word by word translation from English)

Когда она закончила изучать французский и итальянский языки в университете Лидса, она путешествовала автостопом через Европу.
Закончив изучать французский и итальянский языки в университете Лидса, она путешествовала автостопом по Европе. ("автосотопом ... по" is just a more common way to say this. "Закончив" sounds better, imho, because it implies "after she graduated..", "когда" gives a bit of impression that it was made at the same time).

Она посетила много стран перед тем, как обосноваться во Франции.
Good. An alternative variant can be "Она побывала во многих странах перед тем, как осесть во Франции".

Мы жили в детстве с мамой очень весело, потому что она никогда не ругала нас когда если мы неубирались или шумели.
The first part is ok, but since "fun" doesn't translate very well in Russian , you may think of many alternative translations, like "В детстве мы с мамой весело проводили время...", "Когда мы были детьми, в нашем доме всегда царило веселье...", etc. The choices are almost limitless.
The second part is plain wrong!
To make a mess - (на)мусорить, устроить беспорядок. Убираться - to tidy up. I switched to nouns (шум, беспорядок) just because it's shorter and neatier. But you can say "...за то, что мы шумели или устраивали беспорядок".
В детстве мы с мамой всегда весело проводили время, потому что она никогда не ругала нас за шум или беспорядок.

Нам позволяли рыть ямы в саду и делать много искустов заниматься различными видами искусств!
"Нам позволяли" stresses that there were a few persons that made this decision. It's better to use impersonal "нам позволялось/разрешалось" instead. The second part of the phrase is ugly, probably because it's not clear what artwork you had on your mind, so it's rather hard to translate. I just got a little creative here.
Нам разрешалось рыть ямы в саду, мы много мастерили и рукодельничали.

Она всегда позволяла нам заниматься тем, что нам нравилось.
Sounds very natural, but the sense of the original phrase is lost. No wonder, because some things just don't translate well in Russian: They either sound "foreign", weird, or you rephrase them until they sound ok, but mean something (slightly) different. "Позволяла" - she allowed, she let us, which sounds very passive, like she just let you run wild and do whatever you like. "Encourage" is more active, guiding, and your choice of verb ("поощряла") is perfect. The trick is to word the whole phrase so it wouldn't sound unnatural. Maybe something like this:
Она всегда поощряла нас в занятиях любимым делом (still not good enough, though). Or maybe like this?
Она всегда поддерживала нас в стремлении заниматься любимым делом. (Ok, enough of that. )

Мы с братом и сестрой превратились (выросли - Olya's correction) в индивидуальных личностей с различными интересами и талантами.
Ok, first - "индивидуальные личности" is not good, like Olya has already said, I suppose it's approximately as bad as "individual individuals" is in English. I suppose you wanted to say "независимые люди/личности". Second, "выросли в людей" is also bad (it sounds like your were not humans before, but then turned into ones). "Выросли людьми" is much better (the stress is on what people you turned into).
Я и мои брат с сестрой выросли независимыми людьми с разными интересами и талантами. ("разными/различными" if you want to stress that all of you have different talents (not the same as your siblings have), or "с разнообразными интересами и талантами" if you want to say that each of you has different (various) tallents).

Моя мама - спокойная и либеральная женщина.
Imho (maybe others won't agree with me) "либеральный" has a strong political (and sometimes even negative!) connotation in Russian. It may depict political views or opinion on major social issues ("he's liberal about gay people" or something along the lines). But saying that your Mom was "liberal" (as a character trait) rings a wrong bell with me. I'd just leave "щедрая" (though it mostly means "generous"), or you may use "доброжелательная" (benevolent, well-wishing), or something else.

Она наслаждается работами по саду и улучшению интерера дома.
In Russian we don't use "наслаждаться" nearly as liberally (he-he) as in English. In Russian it's a more strong emotion, and here it sounds rather pompous. Just use "нравиться"/"любить". "Улучшение интерьера дома" (improving of the house interior) is cumbersome and terribly formal, like she's a foreman, writing a report. I'd say:
Она любит работать в саду и заниматься благоустройством дома.
(благоустройство (from words "благо" (good) and "устройство" (arrangement))- improvement; face-lift; beautification, upgrading. )

Ей нравится пользоваться дрелью, пилой и молотком!
Wrong! Ей нравится пользоваться = she likes to use...
She is good at using drills, saws and hammers! = Она хорошо управляется с дрелью, пилой и молотком!

Однако, её главная любовь - это поэзия.

Она посещает две группы поэзии каждую неделю и всегда пишет.
For groups of people united with the same hobby who meet regularly we use the word "кружок" (or in some cases, mostly when talking about sports, "секция"). "Поэтический кружок" is a set (common) expression.
Она каждую неделю посещает два поэтических кружка и всегда пишет.

Она пишет о жизни, любви, и на различные другие темы.
    It sounds a bit disjointed.
Она пишет о жизни, любви, и о многом другом.

    6. I have an excellent relationship with my mother and speak to her often.
    У меня прекрасные отношения с мамой, и я часто с ней общаюсь.
I hope that when i become a mother, i will give my children the fantastic upbringing that i have been lucky enough to receive.
Надеюсь, что когда я стану матерью, я смогу дать своим детям такое же чудесное воспитание, какое повезло получить мне самой.
