    Help with military translation

    Hi there

I'm translating some military WWII related texts and I'm having some difficulties with some terms.

    Os this text

Командир 287-го полка 25-й Чапаевской стрелковой дивизии капитан Ковтун А., начальник связи ст.лейтенант Шевелев А., комиссар полка старший политрук Балашов Н.А., послуживший прототипом комиссара в трилогии К.Симонова "Живые и мертвые", на командном пункте в дни обороны Одессы
What it's Чапаевской and полка ?

By deduction I can say it's one kind of unit like Division or Battalion, but can someone exactly tell me?

    Re: Help with military translation

Oh, come on! Don't you all know who Chapaev was??!?!??!?!!? Only the most famous hero of the Russian civil war! Anyhow, they named this division after him, apparently.

    Translation:
The commander of the 287th regiment of the 25th Chapaev rifle division, captain Kovtun A., the liaison chief senior lieutenant Shevelev A., the regiment commissar senior political officer Balashov N.A., having served as the prototype of the commissar in K. Simonov's trilogy "The living and the dead", in command in the days of the defense of Odessa...

Anyhow, you mustn't be fooled by "Чапаевской." It is an adjective modifying the feminine noun дивизия(which has become дивизии). Thus, Чапаевской дивизии actually Чапаевская дивизия in the genitive. Please, do pay attention to your cases!

By the way, apparently there's even a street in Odessa named after this famous division, "Улица 25-ой Чапаевской дивизии".
