    seek help on phrase translation

    Сам Ющенко навлек на себя гнев соратников тем, что обратился за помощью к своему бывшему сопернику Януковичу

    I translate it like the following:
    Ющенко take the blame from his co-workers on himself for that he went to his former opponent for help
    Is it right?
    And how to understand the word тем here?

    навлек на себя is like brought on himself.
    tem is like, with what. it doesn't make sense otherwise.

    Yushenko has incurred the anger of his comrades-in-arms by seeking help of his former rival Yanukovitch.

    Тем here is best to ignore. The translation of тем would result in:
    Yushenko incurred the anger of his comrades-in-arms by the fact that he sought help from his former rival - Yanukovitch.

    No it's not right because it is doesn't make sense in English and sounds dreadful.

    Тем here is best ignored. The translation of тем would result in:

    * Ч = tch is a French transliteration
    Ч = ch is the standard for English.

    Also because it's a Ukrainian name, we usually use и = y. So, we get Yanukovych.

    You can say it both ways.

    You will most commly hear "it is best ignored". Your variant is also possible though.
