how do you say freelance and freelancer in Russian. is it just like свободный something?

Usually it's "фриланс" and "фрилансер".
But it's a relatively new term , so some people still don't know what it is. "Фрилансер" has become rather common brcause there is no an adequate equivalent in russian. Probably "вольнонаемный работник" is the closest though not the best.

If you do some job for some company from time to time, but you are not on the staff, you are called внештатный сотрудник. They do prefer to call themselves in the English way.
