    Cool Fix my poem?

I wrote a poem in English that I thought would translate well into Russian, and tried to translate it using a textbook and google, so there's probably a lot of mistakes. Can someone look over this and correct the parts that don't make sense? It's for a gift for my nephew so I'd like it to be as accurate as possible, but keep it fairly simple because he can't even speak yet.
This is my poem in English:

    On the Hunt

    There once was a fox
The fox went out on a cold night
He prayed for the moon to light his way
Because he was going on a long journey

He ran down to the farmer's house
and he snuck into where the chickens sleep
He said "some of you are going in my belly
    before I go home tonight”

The fox grabbed the biggest chicken with his right hand
and grabbed another with his left hand
he watched all the feathers fall
and felt the legs hang over his shoulder

the old gray Woman left the bed
    she looked outside and yelled
    “Ivan the chickens are gone!
the fox is on the hunt!
    ---------------------------------
    ---------------------------------
And this is my rough translation:

    Thanks for the help guys!

    ----------

    Жил-был лис
Однажды он вышел в холодную ночь
Он молил луну чтобы она осветила его путь
Потому что он собрался в дальнюю дорогу

Он подбежал к дому фермера (ran over)
И проскользнул в курятник со спящими курами (hen-coop)
Он сказал "кто-то из вас сейчас пойдет в мой животик
а потом я пойду домой" (and then I will go home)

Лис схватил самую большую курицу правой рукой
И ещё одну - левой рукой
    Он смотрел как падают перья
И чувствовал куриные лапы, висящие через плечо

Старая седая женщина встала с постели
Она посмотрела в окно и закричала
    "Иван, куры пропали!"
    Лис вышел на охоту!

Лиса is feminine, since you use "he", call it "лис". It's masculine.
    Лиса - Лис
    Кошка - Кот
    Собака - Пёс
    Гусыня - Гусь
    Индейка - Индюк
    Утка - Селезень
    Курица - Петух
    Волчица - Волк
    Тигрица - Тигр
    Львица - Лев
    Слониха - Слон
I underlined those we use by default when we don't care about the gender.

I underlined those we use by default when we don't care about the gender.
Соба́ка (лат. Canis lupus familiaris) — домашнее животное, одно из наиболее распространённых (наряду с кошкой) «животных-компаньонов».
При необходимости разграничения по полу употребляются термины «кобе́ль» (самец) и «су́ка» (самка).

Thanks for taking the time to do that -- it's helpful for foreigners to know! But what about sheep and cattle and hogs? (I think I already know what the "default" terms should be, but I'd rather double-check with a native speaker.)

what about sheep and cattle and hogs?
    Овца - Баран
    Корова - Бык
    Коза - Козёл
    Свинья - Боров

I guess advanced learners already know that these words also can be abusive:

Овца - a naive female person, who can be swindled easily, also it can be an impudent female person (especially if she's "Barbie style")
Баран - a stupid male person (especially if he's very stubborn)
Корова - a thick female person
Козёл - a mean/low male person, also "stunk"
Свинья - a dirty/nasty person (especially if they live in a dirty house) or a person who acts meanly
Боров - a thick, massive male person (uncommon, usually bookish)
Петух - a passive gay person in a prison (in a criminal slang mostly)
Индюк - a pompous male person, who tries to look more considerable than he indeed is
Хитрая лиса - (with the adjective) a sly person, "as sly as a fox"
Одинокий волк - (with the adjective) a harsh/tough/cool male person = lone wolf
