You were right the first time - there is no female version of this word, at least I never heard of it. (нелегалка? ). So you, more likely, used it properly (but I don't shure completly). I was confused by the gender of the word itself.

It is a rural North Eastern American phrase signifying surprise or disbelief. I suggest you use it and impress your friends!

I have never heard it in the US South, that's for sure...

I've just searched for this expression on Google (to search for the exact phrase, I have included it in parentheses). Guess what? Only 2 hits!!!!
It's a made-up expression, nobody's using it
