    Олимпиада!

Okay, I'll stop being the attention whore soon, but I really have to tell you this. Next Thursday, I'll be competing in the Olympiada of Spoken Russian. Last fall, I participated in the Essay Contest. I am continuing to study, and will keep you posted as best I can.

    This time w/ links!

I see the ads for this in the ACTR newsletter all the time. It sucks that our hs's never had a Russian program, but I wish you luck!

It's a semi-rude idiom that means that he will stop attracting attention to himself soon.

"Attention whore" is one of the single greatest terms in the English language. Here he's using it jokingly -- subpar definitely isn't an attention whore. Compare him to, say, Paris Hilton (actually just plain "whore" applies here) or Joan/Melissa Rivers. They're people who lack any sort of talent whatsoever and have to resort to cheap, pointless stunts and exhibitions to make the news.

What we study (I am in Level II)
I sort of did something like the poetry portion of this last year in what was called "Level IV" (maybe a rip-off). Anyway I had to recite a poem or part of a poem and my teacher told me to learn the first part of Pushkin's epic poem Ruslan and Ludmilla. I ended up going next to last and all the other contestants did short poems and said them with heavy accents and bad pronunciation, so my poem didn't seem so awful, even though I was really nervous.
After I was done everyone cheered and I was REALLY embarrased.

    What is this?
Typos, not used to the Russian Keyboard. And I can support this! Notice how most of them are vowels. The 'ч' I knew, too. I just can't type.

How might I answer these questions more intelligently?

There is an ATCR Russian essay competition in the fall? I participated in one in early February but we still haven't gotten the results back though. I want to participate in the Olymipad, but unfortunately it's only for high school, I believe and not college. You're lucky that you go to a high school that offers Russian, my high school only offered Spanish and French as languages, basically the same Latin derived shit. Nothing interesting whatsoever. I'm surprised there isn't a Olympiad for College.

    Okay. Gettin' really freaked now.

The sudden-ness-ism of it all has hit me, and I'm losing self-confidence. I'm looking for a backup plan that doesn't use explosives. Any ideas?

Oh, and I would also like to know something long and smart to say to greet my judge with (y'know, to impress falsely), if you know any good phrases.

    THANKS.
