Several people quoted my comment regarding a life free of McDonald's, commercials and Hollywood.
I just want to clarify that I grew up largely enjoying this freedom, so I know what I am talking about. (You could get them in Sweden at the time, if you really sought it out, but for me, growing up, it was very rare. No loss. Now it's everywhere, 24/7)
Now, I'd say that all of these are bad in their own ways, they are addictive and they don't really add anything of lasting value to anyone's life. Not denying there are good Hollywood films, but on the whole I could live without them, and I did, for the most part until I started university.
I think these products appeal to people's lowest instincts.
—Food that's just fat, sugar and salt.
—Entertainment that attracts viewers with violence, sex, consumerism and escapism.
—Commercials that will make people desire junk they don't really need and constantly makes you feel you are missing something. I think it's the "profit-above-all" mentality.
While I'm not in favour of this kind of stuff being banned, I think any society is better off without this addictive junk.
So I stand by my comment.
