Slang.

Okay. I'm writing a letter for a homework assignment. It's really basic. I really don't care about this assignment and I think it's useless and time-consuming (even though it will take me < 10 minutes. But I like to complain).

But while I was staring at the blank screen, I got to wondering: common what is Russian slang? I know you guys probably read dozens of these posts, along with ("HI I JUST GOT A RUSSIAN BRIDE AND I NEED TO KNOW HOW TO GET HER TO MOVE IN BED HOW DO YOU SAY I LOVE YOU KTHXBAI"), so I'm not even asking for a formal post, as I'm sure there is a thread already based on this discussion, or a website you can point me to. I'm looking for something I could say in a conversation w/ a normal Russian (and understandable to).

KTHXBAI.

Oh, and on a more informal note, I got high for the first time on Friday at a party of my friends. How would you say marijuana (in slang, of course)?

Yes, I realize the closeness of the Russian Bride thing and this.

Note: there has been some confusion about this, which will soon turn out as another question. The above is a transliteration (as best as I could) of English "Wow". What would I substitute here in Russian?

So your saying you want to learn Russian slang? Google it, there's probably thousands of web pages with Мат (russian slang language).

On another note, be careful when talking to other Russians and using slang. If you don't really have a good command of the language, you'll most likely come off sounding like an ass or a retard. Also, people take certain phrases much more seriously - it's not as casual as in English.

It's good idea to know these phrases, but, in my opinion, foreigner should avoid using them.

Translation: It's a good idea to know when someone is cussing you out, but a horrible one to do it yourself.

i think this forum is designed for people to come with questions, and giving them answers like "google it" is inpolite and ignorant. if you don't care answering, why bother registering?

anyways, marijuanna:

lol thats right getting drunk with them in the bar and they calling me friendly names and i look it up on the internet and call them names back but the thing is what i find offensive and what they find offensive are two totally different things and more based on culture youd have to stay there for a while to get it. Its the same with me even being in south africa or now in the Uk when the english in the UK cuss me I dont really take offense because they carry more weight in their minds with the word than I do lol even though its exactly the same swearwords i would use at home they just dont carry the same weight and dont even think they are swearing at me and we supposedly speak the same language
its my opinion - but its flexible

Hey!!! People!!!

Do not confuse "Мат" with "Сленг"!!! They're TOTALLY different!

Oh, sorry for screaming, "Мат" is a very rude and intolerable layer of language and must not be used in public places or when you're talking to someone who you're not sure will tolerate it! AFAIK "Мат" is a unique layer present only in russian language, it dates back to extreme slavonic antiquity and was used for sacred pagan rituals only at a certain time of the year and therefore "мат" was and is considered forbidden language. It must be used only in certain and very carefully considered situations!

Slang is just a colloquial layer, it's by no means "мат"!

That is wrong. I think.

http://www.holiday.by/art.asp?id=3424
