I can't imagine anyone use any of those. They sound so horribly rustic. (I come from a village, still I wouldn't use them because they sound so freaking outdated)

The following are more or less used:

"Вот где собака зарыта." (т.е. вот в чем суть дела)

More often though we use the following spoonerism: "вот где собака порылась".

"Нужен, как собаке пятая нога."

I hear this one but much more often "как щуке зонтик".

"Псу под хвост."

Псу? I've actually heard "коту под хвост".

"Посади свинью за стол, она и ноги на стол."

We don't normally use the full version. We'd just say "посади свинью за стол".

"Работа не волк, в лес не убежит."

Used quite a lot. Frankly, I cannot understand those who say it, though.

"Разбирается, как свинья в апельсинах."

To give you an idea of how ridiculously obsolete most of the sayings quoted so far are, may I present to you two old Yorkshire dialect sayings:

T'best way ter git aa' o'Lancashire is t'roid ter Yorkshire
and
If 'e fell in t'midden, 'e'd coom aa' smellin o'rawses

Do you really want to sound like that in Russian? Then take my advice and forget those animal idioms.

Я не буду это оспаривать, так как давно уже не нахожусь в русскоговорящей среде и не знаю, как народ сейчас между собой разговаривает, но для интереса прошлась по яндексу и вот что получила об использовании этих пословиц:

Now, lets look at our champion - 2930 hits (big smegging deal!). So what kind of sites did we get hist on? Let's see - arty-farty crap ala "Любимые песни Ольги Арефьевой" and all kinds of quotes from the dictionary of Russian proverbs by Даль. (the book which had been dead long before it was actually published). Now, what else? Ah, the Live Journal. That mighty compendium of correct Russian expressions! Give me a break. Normal people stopped talking like that yonks ago. A few undergraduate tw@ts with a penchent for obscure language usage don't count. A native speaker may allow himself the luxury of sounding weird or taking the p*ss out of the language, but learners of the language have very different goals to achieve. Do you really think that learners of Russian should waste their time on expressions like those when they have more pressing matters at hand?

What does this mean?
If you bark loud enough, everybody will hear?

No. This saying is about a uselessness of screaming. The only result of it will be sound waves for wind to carry around. And usually it is said about somebody's enemy or somebody who is disliked immensely. E.g. Osama BinLaden/

It's just fine to say hella tired. I have a lot of friends back home who say it. You can use it wity a lot of things like this is hella cool, or this is hella stupid, etc. So your post was just fine.

Actually this is a slang word a lot of people don't know so that fact that you know the word and how to use it is good. My hat's off to you.

This expression is usd by a lot of American Indians in my area. Example: "It was hella good bronc ride." "He's hella good roper, too."

true, seems like hella is a california (maybe even just northern california slang) and other northwest states. I grew up in LA and never heard it until going to camp in san francisco. Maybe it has moved south though by now. Its pretty lame.

Результат поиска: страниц — 6996, сайтов — не менее 1153

Another two mentioning horses:

Коней на переправе не меняют = Don't change horses in midstream.
Не в коня корм - about useless efforts.
