    Party Animals Question

Once my father after watching another American film asked me a question: "I don't get that---when someone has a party at his place and throngs of unknown people come there, occupy everything, turn on the music loudly, litter everywhere, damage different things, etc. What's the reason of letting them in or just saying it's an open party?" I couldn't answer. I think it's a cultural thing and has some ground. Could anyone explain it?

Well,... when the booze is going,... nothing really matters, the mess is a problem for a new day.

They'll like you more for throwing such a bangin' party.

But what does the host think about before the booze begins?

    LOL.
Usually, in these plots it's because:
    a) it's their stupid kids doing it without their permission and/or prescence
    or
    b) the characters are just so "shocked" that they don't stop it or they just don't want to seem impolite -- and it just keeps getting worse and worse...

To add to Dobry's and everyone else's answers,

One could also say that the number of people attending the party improves the host's Social Status amoung his/her peers. It gives the illusion that the host is popular.

    It's silly really.

I think that happens alot more on TV than in reality. I've never attended or hosted a party where I didn't know every person there. If you're giving out an endless supply of free booze though anything could happen. I don't know anyone that could afford that much alchohol.

Here in college the host of the party sells a wristband for $5 or so that allows access to all the drinks. Since all they have are kegs of beer and really cheap liquor, it's almost impossible to drink $5 worth of it.

It's called a house-party and it is frequently thrown in college communities. A bunch of college kids rent a house and invite all their friends, their friends friends, their friends friends friends friends (skipping on level of friendship) and party. Nobody cares who you know, everyone can join. Fun going to them (lots of people, chances to meet new people, chances to get laid , etc.), not so fun being the ones who rent the house.

There was a recent film called "The Wedding Crashers," Rtyem -- the whole plot revolves around these two guys who crash wedding parties to pick up girls. That's the general premise, really...
