Thread: Russian DVD recommendations

Hi,

I have just hugely enjoyed the Bortko version of Мастер и Маргарита in Russian, as well as the extraordinary version of Собачье сердце. I also have Двенадцать стульев, С лёкгим паром and Служебный роман.

I would love to hear your recommendations of good Russian films / TV serials that would help to improve my Russian as well as being interesting to watch. Versions with English subtitles would be superb, but not absolutely essential, as it would force me to listen more carefully. I was thinking of getting the classic TV serial Место встречи изменить нельзя, but there must be loads which are worth watching and have contributed to contemporary Russian culture.

the are some films that are so bad i think you should look into those too, жесть and груз 200 spring to mind. i just watched 1814 (or some 1800 date) and it was ok, good acting, nice old style speech but the plot was a little weak. ночной и дневной дозор were good and i also thought тиски and статский советник were good

I think you should to divide the concepts "(New) Russian cinema" and "(Old) Soviet cinema" (much more qualitative one). These are quite different concepts often.
"Собачье сердце", "Двенадцать стульев", "С лёгким паром", "Служебный роман", "Место встречи изменить нельзя", Sherlock Holmes films by Maslennikov, Gayday's comedies, "Москва слезам не верит" - they all belong to the Soviet cinema.

"Девятая рота", "Дневной дозор", "Ночной дозор" - this is new Russian cinema and to a great extent it's an imitation of the American cinema.

only the ones that do an average job of imitating, like 9ое рота. night and day watch both had original-esque plots and good acting and special effects dont do anything to hinder the film.
thought Pier FM was good too

ЖАРА is a good movie as well..
But 9 рота is my favorite.

I agree. "Возвращение" by Звягинцев is great! It's one of the very few modern Russian films I truly enjoyed. (BTW, "9-я рота" sucks in my opinion, but it's a matter of taste. )
