You were there one year total? Was it 10 months of class time and the rest on your two trips? Their webpage indicates a 10 month year, and I'm curious whether that means they're shut down for two months. What was the general age range of folks enrolled there? Do you intend to go back?Originally Posted by kalinka_vinnie
Vinnie, we really should give you an Oscar for the best movie of the year

Don't believe the website. I also read it and decided to do the 10 month program (1 year), but it turns out that you pay for exactly how long you want to stay. You pay by the week. If you pay the whole thing in advance they give you like 10% off. They are not shut down at any time (except holidays). And it is extremely flexible. You can decide to take off one week to go to Moscow, you will miss the classes, but it is no big deal. The groups are divided into people at the same level as you, so there is no fixed format. I was there a total of 10 months.
The student group was very varied. There were many younger students who study russian at their native universities, but also there were many other types, like me, who were studying there out of their own interest. I met an italian communist, a Norwegian ballet dancer, a Swedish rocket scientist, a Finnish journalist, an Italian doctor, an American computer security specialist, a Japanese journalist, a few pensionists and alot of my aged people who are there out of their own time.
I will go back, but not to that particular school, since I think I have used it for what it was worth... I probably want to do some more traveling, see some new places etc.

I see. Interesting. Why did you choose to stay in the dorms / an apartment instead of with a host family? If it isn't too bold, about how much did you budget for the entire thing? $15k or thereabouts? I appreciate your input. It's something I'm very interested in doing.Originally Posted by kalinka_vinnie

Well one thing was the money. It was alot cheaper to stay in the dorms, and then it was very tempting renting a flat in the middle of downtown (the dorms is like 30 min away (by foot/metro)). But for a short period of time, a host family would be great, you even get fed authentic Russian food! I spent a total of $10k for the whole year (!)Originally Posted by Michael_SF

I absolutely loved your movie!!
I am kind of curious though...did you find you were able (allowed) to film around the cities very easily, or do you just do it and hope no-one (police) catches you (aside from the "metro")? I guess I am asking if it is okay if "tourists" take a lot of pictures/videos?
I also laughed at "the short long plane ride" lol
By the way, so sorry to hear about that scam they pulled on you
Thankyou for a great movie!
Thanks!!! It is great ppl like my movie!Originally Posted by Larushka
About your question, nobody questioned me about filming in the city, I guess they are used to tourists filming and taking pictures. For the museums, you have to pay to take film or pictures. As for the metro... well... I got caught once (at that time I didn't know it wasn't allowed), and since then I did it stealthly. I happen to have a camera that fits in a cigarette package

I really liked your movie too, it's fun to watch! Especially the way you use the music with the video--though I wasn't sure why you used подмосковные вечера for your stroll around Petersburg.
Well, that song was actually called Leningradskie Vechera, but the tovarishi on top wanted a song about moscow so they made the songwriter change it. So it is actually a song about St. Petersburg And it also was the most suited one for that particular theme of all the music I had at the time.Originally Posted by begemot

"
