Truely an interesting film... It had a certain simple expressivness
Russia certainly has got contrasts of beauty, more of a natural flower meadow, where one may find the most beautiful things as oppose to the western heavy-handed flowerbeds Nice images!

I cried during all the "Peterburg is beautiful" segment!

    Kjempebra!!!

How did/do you find the russian pronounciations as a (I assume) Norwegian?

This is just one of my favorite still frames from Kalinka Vinnies outstanding movie. Scene from Kalinka in da Piter. Калинка himself is on the left I presume. Download the whole motion picture!

I stayed at the same dorm for a week. Had a weird italian roomate who loved the san antonio spurs for some reason and watched porn at night, and an american roomate who was in the police (probably government). I moved a week later to a host family in the center of town (halfway in between metro vostannie and chernyshevskaya). It was like a 5 minute walk to either one. 25 min walk to smolny, which I usually did on the way back from class, since we had a free bus from Chernyshevskaya in the mornings.

If you lived on Ligovskii prospekt, why did you have to walk through the park everyday? Seems kind of out of the way Im pretty sure there is another road around ploshad vosstania that runs diagonally towards smolny. Unless of course you wanted to.

Half of the ciee american group was very weird, ill admit that. For some reason we got like 10 missionaries and another 5 that were very religious and that was just weird to be around.

What did you think of the weird guy who ran the computer internet room? A little odd. Maybe a little too in touch with his feminine side. I swear he was wearing makeup some days.

Actually I lived on Liteiniy prospekt, and my route was the fastest by foot. I could of taken the marshutka number 15, but I liked the morning walk. Especially in the freezing winter

With weird internet guy, you mean Sasha? He wore makeup? , he had an earring, I know, but he was ok. Apparently he used to be a chemist, before 1991... He knew quite a bit about explosives, so I hope you were nice to him

ah liteni, nevermind, that is the best way way then. Not sure if you ever went on baskov pereulok. Its probably 2-3 blocks away running perpendicular. Thats where i lived. Its a really small street one block up from ulitsa nekrasov. I was on it between mayakoskaya and vosstania. (I saw you had a picture of one of the statues on mayakovskaya in front of one of the institutes, green one). After i got back from petersburg, i read a news article how thats the street putin grew up on. Pretty funny.

Vacationing, finishing a new book, and what have you. She is busy and not particularly communicative.

What was your motivation to go? What was the name of the school you attended? How did you arrange the trip?

I'm really hoping that after my current project at work I can swing a few months and do something like this - next spring or summer or something. I'd be very unpopular if I just up and left.

Cool movie. I, too, am hoping to take a trip to Russia next year. I'd love to take a month off and just go, but don't know if it'll happen. I envy you! Sounds like you had fun. How much Russian were you able to learn while you were there, starting from zero?
P.S. - Исправление ошибок в моих текстах на русском всегда приветствуется

My motivation was always there... I don't know, I had this strange sensation that I needed to spend time in Russia, see how people live there... you hear so many bad things about Russia, that you just finally give in and go to see for yourself... and it isn't true!

The school is Saint Petersburg State University, center for russian language and culture. It's located in the Smolniy cathedral. They arranged everything for me. I just vented my general interest in their general direction and they wrote up an invitation and helped me get my visa, I didn't have to pay a dime until I arrived there. classes are usually 20 hrs a week, and you pay per week you are going to study there. So in essence, u could be there for only 2 weeks if you wanted to...

How much Russian I learned? In a year, I thinked I surpassed all the students who had been studying Russian in the university for 5 years. The best way to learn a language is living in the country who speaks it!

But of course, it really depends on your motivation. The biggest mistake is to always hang out with other students who speak only english. You won't practice the language much. A host family is great practice.

But there are many other language schools in St. Petersburg, I can't really tell which one is better... and prices are changing. I think it is significantly more expensive now, then it was only two years ago...

Well... uh... I wasn't trying to brag or anything, but just show that studying Russian in Russia is much better than studying it at home... anybody can accomplish that "feat"... probably better than me anyway...

    modest enough yet?
