What's that? How is it celebrated and what is the purpose of that day?

That question was asked at the other forum, and the asker said that the Americans he knows have never heard about that.

It's a stupid fake holiday. I'm assuming it's a joke. What you have to understand, is that in the US at least, there's this desire to have a holiday for everything -- it's just a dumb pop culture thing. So you literally have every day being a holiday: http://library.thinkquest.org/2886/sep.htm . It's all about stupid gimmicks and nothing more. There's two sides to it, and they're both self-serving dribble: companies will make them up "pudding day" for example, just so they have an artificial day they can use as an excuse for promotions (and so they can sell more crap); and on the other side, people on the Internet who do it as a joke, with the hope that someone will see it and start a cult-phenomenon to increase their web traffic. In both cases they're aided by Radio DJ's, etc. It's all a load of сrap. A hangover, in case you don't know the term (I'm sure Russian's know the CONDITION though ) is just the residual side-effects of getting drunk the night before...

Oh, I know what hangover is. Always liked that word.

Still, I don't fully understand. Is that fake holiday is for teetotaller or for drunkards?

I think in this case it's just a joke. I hope I'm right; if not, that's just absolutely stupid (and you can bet it's backed by some beer company).

In Russia we also have a lot of stupid holidays, in Soviet times they were like (and some of them still are) "the day of buldozer workers" or "the day of water closet cleaners' trade union", anothers are jocking excuse for not drinking without reazon - 300 (or 500) years of Russian balalaika, or 20 years without harvest in the village.
