Thread: Linux and Russian

I just switched over to a Linux Fedora operating system due to the fact that my old laptop kept crashing to the Blue Screen of Death and then was stolen out of the repair shop. The good news is that they gave me a better laptop in compensation, The bad news is that i am having a hard time finding compatible software for learning Russian. Does anyone know of any programs that I can download onto a Linux OS by per chance???

There's a *lots* of free programs for Linux -- which one do you need?

If, for example, the question is only in browsing russian web-resources -- all decent Linux browsers I know (Mozilla, Konqueror, Galeon, etc.) are working with cyrillic without extra efforts.

I use Firefox browser. But I need things like Interlex Vocab programs such as Kwatts has been donating files for. It turns out that I can't get Linux to work with Interlex or any online translators. I have no problems using cyrilics.

PS I don't plan on going back to Internet Explorer and Microsoft EVER! I'm sick of their crap!

Wow, let me shake your hand!
But it's a big deal to make Linux work with Russian, especially if you want to have a deep support of Russian (i.e. Russian filenames, Russian network shares, etc). And it's better to remember that Linux is command line, not graphical interface and start turn your Linux to Russian with locale. Unfortunately, I'm not skilled in Fedora Core tuning, but if you had Debian, I would can help you with more detail advices

Нет, чтобы Катеньке поставить себе последнюю версию KDE или Gnome и не заниматься извращениями.

Не, все эти десктопы совсем не unix way :)

Катенька выёживается, имхо. хватило бы 2 короткие команды. Во первых дискету форматировать не обязательно, если она пустая, во вторых файлы киррилицей обычно мало кто называет и при монтированнии девайса поддержку можно было бы не ставить...в третьих зачем искать файл с отчетом по всему диску...она что, не знает где он у нее лежит?

Она же секретарша, откуда её знать где чё лежить :)
И тем более она не знает пустая/форматированная дискета или нет.

As for me, first link ( http://www.chat.ru/~mueller_dic ) works OK.

"Slowo" project really moved. Now it's homepage seems to be at http://slowo.newmail.ru/ -- all the files mentioned above are easy to find there.

I could suggest asking on the fedora linux community site, asking in www.justlinux.com...
