    Instant Messnger Russians Use

during my stay in russia i noticed one thing... almost every russian uses ICQ. They dont prefer YAHOO or MSN which are anytime the first preference around the world. Even in most internet cafes, u have to request specially to install YAHOO or MSN. while ICQ is sorta universal !

    why so? just curious...

ps- Russians settled in other countries do use yahoo and msn..... plz correct me if i am wrong.

Short answer: Because Yahoo and MSN suck.
Long answer: Because ICQ, like Winamp, used to be the best program of its type until AOL bought/ruined it.
    Shortest answer: Who cares?

Nah, Mike, it is because ICQ came before all these other programs with support for Russian characters! That's at least what I heard. And old habits die hard.

Yes, this is true. Yahoo now has Russian support, though. AIM still doesn't....which is very frustrating when all my English friends insist on using it. How else can I barrage them with confusing characters they don't understand?

AIM does have Cyrillic support. I use it all the time. You have to figure it out though, and that might be a task that only the moon monster can figure out.

What’s the difference between these instant messengers?
I.e. why you choose one messenger instead another?
Whey is all free, easy to use and use low resources.
When I got my PC, a lot of my friends already have ICQ UIN, so it was clear choice, which messenger to use...

i think if you switch your font to arial in aol it works. Or at least it did for me with some people. Also, you could geta program like trillian that works with aol messenger (along with others) and you can type in cyrillic.

www.miranda-im.org - the best! ICQ, Yahoo, AOL, Jabber, Skype and everything you wish... in one smart program.
I would be grateful if you would correct my mistakes, since I would like my English to sound as natural as possible.
