The 89-th anniversary of the Revolution

November 7th or October 25th (old style) is the 89th anniversary of the Great October Socialist Revolution in Russia.
In 1917 Bolsheviks led by Vladimir Lenin (Ulianov) have overthrown the interim government and established a first ever Socialist State on the territory of the Russian Empire.
One of the darkest ages in the history of Russia had begun.

    Related joke:
    - What is the most devastating weapon in the world?
    - The cannon of the Aurora cruiser. One blank shot caused 70 years of ruin.

That idea worked for over 70 years. The results were poor, though.

Это не очень долгое время. Советский Союз всегда казался неразрушимым, но на самом деле почти все мог бы пережить его.

Could you rephrase that. I don't quite understand what did you mean.

Не думаю, что это была победа чьей-то идеи. Просто упала старая никчёмная власть. А потом новая власть заявила, что всё так и было задумано.

Я немного поправила,.. но мысль все равно не ясна

I recall reading a psycology book by Erich Fromm in the summer and he stated that the USSR was a country where one could develop his personality to the full. The book was written in the 1930s, I guess, so Fromm surely couldn't predict the future development of the USSR.

I take charlestonian's view that the idea per se was very sensible but failed in real life.
I'm not a bitter opponent of socialism (and the Soviet Union for that matter) but present-day Russia is little better than the higher political reaches of the USSR.

Maybe it was only Leninism that failed rather than socialism as such.
One day, when I write brilliant Russian I will put some Russian text here. However, I can't promise that it will be in anyway witty.

Please correct my Russian. I implore you fellow human.

Lenin just redesigned works of Marx and Engels. They were concentrated on economics and described class struggle just academically. Lenin shifted it towards politics and decided actually to try. A crazy idea is usually a harmless thing but this time it has received a full financial support from Germany. (Maybe this time there was some justice in the situation since Germany had collapsed too shortly after that).

Lenin viewed socialism as an a transitional phase from capitalism towards communism. Communism is not opposed to capitalism according to Lenin but just a next stage.
    Slavery -> Feudalism -> Capitalism -> Socialism -> Communism.
Radical communists stamped capitalism as a dead-end branch of evolution which ultimately turns to imperialism and then - working class will have a revolution.

There was no failure... it is the evolution of ideas.

And because of that evolution, NOW we are speaking, writing, talking, debating, and discussing ideas, from many countries and philosophies.

    This a good thing.

But the death of so many people was a bad thing. The failure of the Tsar to act on, and control the problems... this triggered the Revolutions.

I'll honor all those who died in the Revolutions, the Great War, in the Stalin purges, Canal construction, Gulag, Ukraine, in the Cold War, Afghanistan... and the unknown.

All of them purchased the freedom for us to speak here, in this forum... I pray for them all.

    You forgot the Civil War...

And for the subject of the topic... Commies did many great things: in several years made from poorest agricaltural country the state with real developed industry, gave education to the majority of people, who couldn't even write their names, defeated the worst plague in the whole human history - the nazis and Adolf Hitler, e.t.c. But aniway, I'm glad that this period of my country's history is over.
Please, correct my mistakes, except for the cases I misspell something on purpose!
