There is a bunch of nouns in Russian which were formerly adjectives, and they are declined like adjectives.
E.g. животное, мороженое, столовая, полицейский etc.
Чудовище means ‘a monster’. A beast is not always a monster.

The word соба́ка is general. A dog can be called собака even if it’s known it is male.
The word пёс can sometimes be used to refer to a dog whose sex is not known (more rarely than собака though)....
Correct. But it’s better to say:
У меня есть собака.
собака — nominative
меня — genitive
Моя собака очень большая.
(Моя собака самая большая. — My dog is the biggest.)

свое́й — instrumental feminine possessive pronoun (the word is redundant here)
жи́знью — feminine instrumental (обязан needs instrumental)

1. The preposition is unnecessary. You should use just genitive.
2. The word нападающий is an adjective converted to a noun. So it declines like an adjective.
