There were and are far more than 9 books, there were originally 9 *episodes*(movies/timeperiods) that lucas wanted to do, but he no longer wants to do episodes 7,8, & 9.....

the Star Wars storyline itself(not scripts) has been there since the begining, and it is a MASSIVE storyline... you should read into the future of star wars in the Expanded Universe or New Jedi Order...
