Seems like those people simply were Ukrainian, or lived there for several years before.

By the way, "шукать" and "трошки", although they're Ukrainian words, are quite understandable and even used as a joke sometimes in Russian. I'm surprised you had difficulties with them.

Sometimes.

This happened at 8:00 am/This occurred at 8:00 am --these are the same

Occur (not happen) can sometimes mean thinking of an idea e.g. It occurred to me that I forgot my wallet.
Happen (not occur) can be used to talk about chance e.g. I needed twenty dollars and it happened that my friend had exactly twenty dollars left.
