Полицейский < words like these ,I find them to be very difficult to read.

I also had a question thos 2 letters in the russian alphabet that are said to have no sound. how do you use them in a word? I am SO confused

I suppose you have Ъ and Ь in mind. They have no sound so we just don't pronounce them.
These letters are used to effect the previous consonant (in most cases to make that consonant hard or soft). That's why they are called "hard sign" and "soft sign".
I'm sure there is more detailed explanation in your textbook (you do have one, don't you?)

What kind of files are they? Just zip files right? Perhaps you can get a free or trial program at downloads.com

They are RAR files - WinZip can handle them (I think). If not, there is a free-to-try program called WinRar that will open them. Go to www.download.com and do a search for WinRar if you are having trouble.
