Russian in exchange for Chinese (Mandarin)/ Japanese sought

    Hi,

I am looking for language exchange Chinese (Mandarin) and Japanese for Russian.

I am male, 38, live in Australia, native Russian speaker.

Post here if you're Chinese or Japanese or are fluent in either of them and eager to learn some Russian or you have questions every now and again.

My Japanese is about JLPT 3, Mandarin on a basic level but able to read and understand short emails.

If you know English well it we'll help us both, I won't be able to explain Russian grammar in Chinese or Japanese and I could ask you questions about your language.

It's OK if you wish to communicate occasionally only, I've got my resources too.

Don't suggest language exchange sites, I know them.

Please don't make fun of the post. I know there are people who search the reverse. I am posting here because it's easier to find them on English sites.

Анатолий, just curious. Are there communities of Russian speakers in Australia? Where are theses communities located? What suburbs or areas? Are there any in the Northern Territory these days, by any chance?

Yes, there are. Why are you asking? Are you in Northern Territory?

There were different waves of Russian immigration from different regions, even from China. Many Russians who fled from the revolution and settled in China fled from Communists again (or their children).

I don't know much about statistics but I heard different figures - from 20 to 50 thousand all over Australia, not just ethnic Russians but Russian speakers, if we include the Ukrainian community, who claim they are only Ukrainian speakers but they also speak Russian, we get a larger number. Originally, there were a lot of Jewish settlers from ex-USSR. In Melbourne, my city, they are around Balaclava, St Kilda but there are a lot of them in South-Eastern suburbs - Carnegie, Caulfield, etc. I don't know Sydney well but originally there were a lot of them in Bondi Beach - a luxury suburb.

Now, there are a lot of new arrivals since the last 10 years or so and ethnic Russians (I am one of them) make up a much larger proportion of Russian speakers. (In Russia, percentage of Jewish is not that high). There are Russian Orthodox churches, community centres, Russian-speaking employment agencies, shops both in Melbourne and Sydney and I know Russian people and organizations in Adelaide. Try Russian Tidbits in Melbourne in Carnegie or walk along Balaclava Road in Balaclava if you ever come to Melbourne. I am not sure about Northern Territory, there won't be many but try white pages to see if there is anything starting with Russian...

Thank you for your post. I am actually looking for a language exchange partner (e. g. Chinese-Russian), so that our correspondence were mutually beneficial.

Since you're not registered I can't contact you but you can contact through my profile.

    我觉得汉字和汉语的声调非常难。

    A Little Early!

    Hi Anatoli:

Thank you for your info on Australia. I wish I'd seen your post a little later this year- would have been interesting to correspond with you. My native language is Malay- I'm Malaysian- currently working out of the Kuala Lumpur but I work with Australian and New Zealand clients for my company. I'm fluent in English- having done my degree in English Literature and English is the one I'm most confortable with.

I am learning both Russian and Mandarin, though because I just started Mandarin 3 weeks ago, I'm a little too early in the game to help anyone My Russian is farther along, because although nowhere near fluent yet, I can read Russian and am learning on my own (it's painfully slow, as you can imagine). This was the primary reason I'm searching this website- looking for some help with my Russian!

    Good luck with the search!
