How should I say in English:

"Они не были детьми, когда они изучали английский язык".
They weren't children, when they was studying English?

"Они не были детьми, когда они изучили английский язык".
They weren't children, when they has been studying English?

BTW, did I write the subject correct? I mean: "Перевод нужен". And what is the right version?

The first sentence is simple enough;
"They weren't children when they studied English."

The second is more complicated, you can't just use tense to translate the meaning of изучить, you probably need to change the verb too;
"They weren't children by the time they had mastered English."

The subject is correct, but spelt wrongly.
