    ...the three horse litters...

Outside the stables the smallest of the three horse litters stood ready.

What's that? I thought, the litters is carried by men.

    In this case, litter means:

straw, hay, leaves etc. used as a bedding for animals

I don't think so. Well, the context is that an old and rich man asked his servants to prepare the litters, because he was going to visit the distant place.
And then... "Outside the stables the smallest of the three horse litters stood ready".
P.S. Or maybe I misunderstood you..

A litter is also something which was used to carry people. Do they specify a date or tell at what time the story occurs?

Oh, great! Thanks, MasterAdmin and Spiderkat. You helped a lot.
So that's a litter carried by horses. May I translate that as "возле конюшни был приготовлен самый маленький паланкин в упряжке (с упряжкой?) из трех лошадей"? By the way what is third horse for?

On the picture you can see a two horse litter and a three horse litter would be one horse on the front and two on the back, or the opposite, and probably because it's a bigger litter.
