straw, hay, leaves etc. used as a bedding for animals
I don't think so. Well, the context is that an old and rich man asked his servants to prepare the litters, because he was going to visit the distant place.

A litter is also something which was used to carry people. Do they specify a date or tell at what time the story occurs?
