Thread: Slang word прокачка

It's from the world of role-playing computer games. Прокачка in Russian means improving skills of your game character and often implies high-speed, aggressive improving. Also they often speak about different strategies of прокачка.

I will be very thankful if someone gives me an English equivalent of the Russian прокачка, or any suggestions...

The dictionary list this as "bleeding." However, this is typically used when some hooligan wants to sabotage his teammates and "bleeds" them by damaging their health. I think pranki has the right idea. Here's what wikipedia pulled up:

In many role-playing games, levels are numbers that represent a character's overall skill and experience. To level or level up means to gain a level. By gaining a level, a character's abilities or stats will increase, making the character stronger and able to safely battle stronger enemies.

Powerleveling is the process of sustained, fast leveling in computer role-playing games. I saw a show on MTW named as "Pimp my ride", which can be rendered into Russian as "Тачка на прокачку". A car is improved in this show. So "Pimp" must be the slang word for "прокачка"

Nope. "Pimps," who are literally the handlers of prostitutes, are know for their, shall we say, non-conventional sense of fashion? It at some point became a verb in slang jargon, meaning something to the effect of "to make stylish" or "to make flashy" (just to reiterate, this isn't a real verb, so you definitely shouldn't use it in your compositions or interviews).

I've played MMORPGs too much for my own health. Probably the closest words would be powerlevelling, level grinding, or experience grinding.

Grinding implies the long, boring, work of levelling. Powerlevelling is the more obsessive, non-stop type of gameplay. Powerlevelling is done by powergamers... the obsessive, non-stop type of gamers

Although powerlevelling is also when a low-level character gets some high-level help for the sole purpose of rapid levelling.

Granted, this was EverQuest and WoW terminology, the two I'm most familiar with. Never thought 6 years in EQ would pay off for anything

There is also the idea that a pimp makes lots of money, and therefore has the power to dress in expensive clothes and drive expensive cars. Thus, to "pimp your ride" is to make your ride (=car) very nice.

I think that this usage is very common among young people in America, but Russian speakers should be aware that some people may find it offensive because of its etymology. I'm 40, and I don't find it offensive, exactly, because I know the intent is positive. However, I do avoid using it, precisely because this positive use gives tacit admiration to "handlers of prostitutes" (euphemism).

Similarly, I don't like it when "gangsta" (=gangster) is used to mean that someone is the epitome of cool.

But, I may be in the minority.

My friends and I (geeky bunch) use "pimp", but not "gangsta", unless we're stereotyping "gangstas" for our amusement. Certainly don't use it with positive meaning.

Yup. I basically use them to mock people, not compliment them; there is however, a certain segment of the population that seems to think these are positive things to be identified with...
