    Opposed to staring?

"If an astronomer had explained to Dr. Bates that the twinkling of stars is caused by heat waves radiating from the earth, would he have stared incredulously? Probably not, since he was opposed to staring."

Dr Bates wouldn't have reacted by staring because staring at someone is rude, and Dr Bates was a polite person.

I'm sure the author pokes fun at poor Dr. Bates. He's afgainst staring because it's bad for the eyes according to his method (have you heard about his book "Perfect Sight Without Glasses"?)

    Ah right.

    No, I haven't.

So there you go, I stand corrected.

I shouldn't have been too lazy to read your original response

I'm glad you haven't read it, because I liked your version. It's so... so... goodnatured.
And who knows? May be you're rihgt, and Bates was just a nice person.

Have you heard for a change about "Fallacies of the Bates System" of Phillip Pollack, OD?
It is out of honesty that Dr.Bates is very popular person in Russia but noone ever heard about Dr.Pollack. I could not find any of translations and I've tried to make balance a little.
    Original article is http://www.quackwatch.org/11Ind/bates.html
    I've started from "Eye Related Quackery" http://www.quackwatch.org/01QuackeryRel ... quack.html.
