Medic is only rarely used to refer to doctors. Usually it refers to emergency medical personnel in the army.

Paramedics, as TATY said, receive only emergency medical training. They help people in car accidents, etc., and take them to a hospital in an ambulance.

A similar term is paralegal. This is a person who assists a lawyer but does not have full training as a lawyer.
