Ah. Now this is even more interesting. I've never been to Scandinavia, so can't pass judgement. The opportunity has arisen, though, to spend a week in Trondheim in June. I will, of course, pass on my impressions. It's all about workmanship of course; a good floor is a long-lived (if scuffed) floor. Fancy, short-lived floors you can keep.

Parquet can be rather nice, granted, but not the cheap stuff they call “parquet” these days
Yes. The swine have rendered the word meaningless.

Do computer chairs with wheels mark wooden floors? Assuming an average weight person is sitting on the chair and not an elephant.

    I don't like cars. I don't want one.

    I do want a floor.

A few years ago I owned a house built in 1930. All the wood in the whole structure was solid California Redwood except for the floors which were solid 1" thick oak planks. Now that was a great house!
Toto, I've a feeling we're not in Kansas anymore.

Dream cars? I change my cars every so often. I tend to stay with my floor a bit longer than with any given car. I also spend more time at home than in my car.

I wholeheartedly apologise for my crude and premature claim that you contribute nothing worthwhile to this forum. I was quite wrong: you bring the half-cocked, pig-headed, alpha-male mindlessness. And where would our picnic be without it? You're an asset, AofD. Oh yes.

Depends whether said floor is varnished. If so, yes.

I still don't understand why Americans don't take their dirty shoes off when they walk around their nicely carpeted houses
Having visited Saint Petersburg recently, I noticed this: THERE IS DIRT EVERYWHERE! For example, outside Площадь Восстания, there is a small very busy, very dirty street. However, I didn't see any genuine soil around. The main problem is that all this dirt is just dust from the vehicles. In America, we wear our shoes to the car, following a clean sidewalk. Then we drive to our destination. We then walk to the house, following another clean path. Our shoes are not yet dirty! However, if it is raining or our shoes get dirty we remove them.
My house has very clean floors and we wear our shoes often. Also, in my dormitory, the floor is so heavily carpeted by stray papers that no dirt actually makes it to the floor.

I like carpets. And I always take off my shoes. I don't know why, but I do. But hardwood floors are nice too, I guess. Although the high gloss floors drive me crazy after a while.

Yeah, but it's way more comfortable to walk around with your shoes off, isn't it? And the floors of public buildings and bathrooms are really rather dirty. Sidewalks, although gray, are also not that clean.

I always put on my slippers or some nice woolly socks, and my velvet dressing-gown. Only thing missing is a pipe.
