Don't let the sun go down on me

I can't figure out the meaning of the idiom exactly. Could you help me? I think it's something about bringing down.

I have no idea what that means, but I have heard it in the ATB’s song Sun Goes Down. And there is another phrase that puzzles me too

    Maybe I’m tired of thinking
Maybe my lines are growing old

    Don’t let the sun
    Don’t let the sun
Don’t let the sun go down on me

Lines are growing old … what the heck that means?

I think this means "Do not keep me waiting."

Maybe my lines are growing old
I take this as saying his lines (words in song) are becoming old - as in they have been said before so are becoming boring/used.

Dont let the sun go down on me
Apart from this being an excellent Elton John song, I take this as not letting anyone hurt you / harm you or get you down.

Well, I think you hit the "Lines growing old" thing on the head. He's talking about his lyrics being "old hat" as they say, or that they've already been done (or at least that the subject matter has already been covered).

As for the "Don't let the sun...etc.", I think what he is trying to say is "Don't let me fade away! I know that I've been around for a while, and sometimes I'm not as "cool" as these new singers, but please don't forget about me!"

Ahem! Here's another lyrics for example:

Don't let the sun go down on me
    Open your heart
Just let me be your destiny
    Open your heart
    What I never felt before
I really need you more and more
Don't let the sun go down on me
    Open your heart

So this really means "don't hurt me". Thanks.

Does anyone know why "sun" and not anything else?

I think that "Don't let the sun go down on me" means something like "Don't forget me"...maybe.

On another, slightly humorous note, I have heard a parody of that song.

It was written about Michael Jackson, and entitled "Don't let your son go down on me"

It might be alluding to an old wise saying that says, "Don't let the sun go down on an argument." or something like that. It pretty much means, "Don't end the day mad at someone." That's the only thing I can think of. Unless he's just being poetic, which is more likely the case.

I think in this case that Saibot is right. Don't forget about me. Don't shut me out. Don't let it end. The sunset symbolizes the end.

I think "don't let the sun go down on me" can mean whatever you want it to mean!

    It could mean:

    - try to stop something that is perceived unstoppable.
    - don't leave me in this state, make a decision
    - make me happy a little bit longer
    - etc

Yea, it means don't forget me.

Blink 182 has a song too like "everytime i look for you the sun goes down, i left another message you are never around..." She forgot about him.
Вот это да, я так люблю себя. И сегодня я люблю себя, ещё больше чем вчера, а завтра я буду любить себя to ещё больше чем сегодня. Тем что происходит,я вполне доволен!

He is basicly saying that he is correct.

It means to get something exactly correct.

The long version of the saying is "to hit the nail on the head".

Yes, I just replaced the word "nail" with the phrase "Lives growing old".

    Thank you, guys.
    Apparently,
"to hit the nail on the head" ("ударить по шляпке гвоздя" if literally) = "попасть прямо в яблочко" ("to hit right in the bull's-eye" если буквально).
