    St. Petersburg's history

Is St.Petersburg used to be part of Finland or perhaps Estonia ? If it is so, when did this began to be city "occupied" by Russia ? I really sorry if this statement is kind of offending to some people here . I've just read it once somewhere (I've forgotten it ) that St.Petersburg becoming part of Russia only after around 1500 AD or perhaps around 1600 AD.

St.Peterburg was founded by Russian Czar Peter I in 1703. It was never "occupied", it was Russian from birth. As for land where it was built, this land can be named finnish or estonian, but it was controlled by Russian state since 10 century.

Thx for your reply, I'm not so sure about what I've read, that's my main reason to ask for it here. I really sorry if you feel offended, I didn't intend to do it .

Offended? No. I just corrected your knowledge. Don't feel offended too.

It is one of the only two cities in Europe (the other is London) to never have been captured.

Or rather Teutonic, who wanted to claim it, or Swedish. I think that Finns or Estonians were never considered by them to be a nation worth having something at all...

London and SPB have never been captured, as well as all Russian cities situated further to the east from Moscow, but still in Europe.

Perhaps they were captured by Tatars-Mongols.

Then I have to change my statement: "as well as all Russian cities situated further to the east from Moscow, still in Europe, that didn't exist before Mongol-Tatar invasion.

It wasn't, and Saratov, Samara, Perm, Archangelsk, Murmansk weren't too... well I really can't enumerate all never-captured cities here.

BTW, we are far away from original topic already.

No, stalingrad wasn't captured. The germans battled for it and lost. There was an enemy presence in the city, but it was hardly "captured". Also... was moscow captured in WWII ? I saw a map in one of my history books that had almost a diagnal line starting from peter, down to moscow and then to stalingrad. It seemed those 3 cities were battled for but never captured. Or was moscow captured ?

No, I don't think Moscow was ever captured, and although I don't remember well, I don't think the Germans even got inside Moscow, although they came awfully close.

Germans saw Moscow through binoculars, but never entered it. Just like in Stalingrad they saw Volga in 100 meters away but couldn't fight their way to the shore. Both defeats became a moral shock to Germans...

But didn't Napoleon take Moscow, if only briefly? I have to admit my knowledge of that 'side' of the Napoleonic War is very poor, my history teacher at school kept blethering on about Nelson and Lady Hamilton and all that stuff.

During Patriotic war of 1812 Moscow was left by Kutuzov in 2nd of September. The city was under control of French army up to 6th of October.

Edit: Фу ты, блин! Corrected “2th” to “2nd”

This discussion is very enlightening to me . BTW, AFAIK St.Petersburg is located near a sea, what is the name of the sea, is it North Sea? My eastern European geography is very poor .
