Sparks notes are wonderful! I had never heard of them before. Thank you! I am very early on in the book...part II in chapter 5. I don't have the book with me at the moment, but I am curious on Prince vasily's position...what is it that he actually does? I realize this sounds silly, but I can't fugure out what his official position is.
Read War and Peace when a schoolboy. Understood bugger all. Re-read it as an adult - understood bugger all. What were your questions?

Prince Vasily is the husband of whatshername, the only surviving legitimate child of the dying whatshisname, the father of the illegitimate child Pierre. He wants the dying whatshisname to give all his money to his daughter, and is expecting him to do so. All these Princes and Counts and all that stuff can have thousands of different "positions". The fact is they are aristocratic, which means they eat all the cake and have parties every night and otherwise do bugger all, as VendingMachine so eloquently puts it.Originally Posted by American
