There is nothing wrong with pronouncing a full O, in Ukrainian it should be pronounced with a full O. When talking about Ukraine I often hear correspondants (probably the one for Russia) talking about president 'yoo-shyen-ka'. In Ukrainian it's pronounced yoo-shchen-ko. Yes he wasn't Ukrainian but the name is.

It's like in the UK there are loads of people with Irish surnames who are British but just have Irish ancestory. It's not an error when someone therefore decides to pronounce the name how it is in it's original language.
