    Russian- A self-teaching guide

K, I'm back! Sorry I've not been on in a long time, I had some major family issues. But anyway, today's my birthday and I've got a russian book! I'm on chapter two with nomnitive singular case:nouns. Just letting you all know I'm back with a book. Just wondering though, the book mentioned that there were two types of softsigned feminine nouns: Predictable and non-predictable. The un-predictable ones you memorize, the predictable ones begin with ж ч ш или щ. And they mentioned the first spelling rule, does anyone know any awesome easy memory-tricks to memorize them with? Thanks!

My dictionary says the last word means Jam... "Happy Jam Day"? lol
    Welcome back Orpheus.

Orpheus, don't memorize spelling rules. I'm learning them as I go along, so that they feel natural. I still don't know them all (perfectly).

Happy birthday Orpheus and welcome back.

    I think "Варенья" = "cooking".

I did a google search on "softsign feminin predictable nouns russian" and I got no hits.
Какая разница, умереть богатым или бедным?

Какой толк от богатства если ты не счастлив.

С днём варенья! (Happy jam day) - С днём рожденья (Happy birthday)!

It's a pun based on words sounding similar - a friendly joke, especially among kids, meaning you can eat a lot of jam on a birthday party.

варенье means "jam", the root is "варить" but it doesn't mean "cooking".
