I might be a little late, but I had something to say about the post above this... In Japan TONS OF PEOPLE SPEAK ENGLISH! Learning English is compulsory I imagine in school, and there were so many Japanese people who were delighted to speak English upon seeing me whether it was perfect or not. This is from spending seven weeks in Tokyo,, but maybe you got stuck with some particularly shy Japanese people Haha
