    Sounding out.....

Just got my course book and going through first few chapters. And well this might be just me or did anyone else fell a little awkward when first learning how to pronounce? So far the words are very simple, just listening over and over. Then I got to the words "твоя, твоё, твой". When trying to do the pronounciation as I heard, is it normal to get tongue tied and twisted while trying to learn this? And does it get easier in time?

Oh yea one more question if I may. If I don't want to use the cyrillic program for my keyboard how would I go about typing in russian?
Something like "твоя" would be "tviya" or atleast that is what I am hearing.

Anyway, thanks for taking time to read this.

    Shaun......
Yea its just me, don't worry.

It's best to get your computer configured to type in russian, but if not, you should use transliteration as perscribed here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transliter ... to_English

If you haven't configured your computer for russian yet because you can't access the cyrillic language pack, check out this site. That's that I've been using and it works amazilgly well.

That is neat. Didn't even know anything like that was out there. But I sitting here thinking it would be much easier to set up computer to type in cryllic. Just have to learn the keys so I can do it faster.

    Thanks for the info tho!!!

I like this one because the keyboard is pretty much phonetic to their english equivilents
    a - а
    b - б
    c - ц
    d - д
    e - е
    f - ф
    g - г
    h - х
    i - и

Well tried the cryllic pack and installed it but windows xp won't recognize it so will look at other options I guess for getting this type of keyboard layout. Thanks for the help.

Just use the Cyrillic support that comes with Windows. You do not have to buy anything to make your computer type in Russian.

About ten years ago I bought a $30 pgm from cyrillic.com that allows me to put russian letters anywhere I want on the keyboard, and it comes with a "student set" or smth like that, which puts
    qwertyuiop
    яшертыуиоп

you get the idea. I even bought the WinXP update. I am using it right now. Hit a key combination (I can choose which one) and I can switch back and forth between кириллица and roman. I can type in Russian as fast as I can type in English with this setup.

I did that because I never did want to have to memorize the itsuken keyboard (or whatever it is.). Why waste my time learning a new layout?

Yea found cryillic.com few minutes ago. The only bad thing now is remembering to switch back to english so when I am typing on trillian my friends can understand me which is very funny in a way.

Finally got to a chapter that starts making us memorize words and how they are pronounced. And wondering if this is a good or bad way of memorizing words and how and what they mean. The words are very easy, for instance, I was talking to another guy at work that studied french in highschool so he knows when I am speaking something other then just jibberish. Anyway for me to learn it seems easier to take these words and use them in everyday sentences. Like, wanna come to моё дом and play some halo? And I have noticed people talking about flash cards......? For me learning is picking 5 to 10 words from this list they gave me, remembering them and through out the day anytime I think of them write them down and what thier meaning is. When I get home of a nite from work, I get the list and see how close or how off I am.

    Anyone have any suggestions?

'Cos the QWERTY layout is designed for slow typing, whereas the йцукен one is designed for quicker typing. And just think of all the girls you will be able to impress with your Russian touch-typing skills!

WTF are you talking about? Show me which posts you are talking about. Most of my posts are about Russian language. My website can be found at this address:

You may have confused me with ol' Winston Wu, whom I don't particularly like either.

    No problem.

Everyone? Haven't heard of any particular trend for girls. I would imagine Russian girls are just like any other girls, except Russian.

    OK, back on topic here...

Learning words is something that is hard at first, but as you get more of a feel for how the language sounds, the easier it gets. Although for memorizing a words meaning; don't. For example don't try to memorize things in this format
    кровать - bed
    еда - food
    музык - music
    книга - book
Think more in the format. I am going to eat еда, then maybe put on some музык before curling up with a good книга and lying down on my кровать. You need to think in russian.

Flashcards are a very good idea. The best proven way to learn vocabulary. Once you have a grasp on a few basic words, write down words you find interesting/useful and then drill them in your spair time. See this site for more information. Check out the main site too, because it has some useful tips on how to learn a language.

    Sorry if I am nitpicking.

I am going to eat еду, then maybe put on some музыку before curling up with a good книгу and lying down on my кровать.

Maybe книгу should be in instrumental form книгой?
I write letters with a ручкой.
I curl up with a книгой.
