    Hello, I just joined

I want to learn Russian and am just starting with the alphabet so far.

I have the "complete idiots guide to learning russian" that is by no means a comprehensive exercise on the language, but hopefully will give me the bare necessities to get started, like simple grammar and the alphabet and etc and it came with a CD to give me a simplest idea of how to pronounce the sounds.

I was going to get the new penguin russian course too after I go through this simple one.

Any other tips to get started?

    Joe

    Hi Joe, welcome!

The Penguin is great, get that one as soon as you can, it's the most comprehensive grammar book out there, IMHO, especially for beginners.

And stick around here, of course....

Is english your first and only language? for one, i hope it is not , and two, it is helpfull if it is not.

You understand right off the bat that everything does not translate like you want it to. (if you speak more than english) And you will learn to not ask questions like "why is that like that", but more of accepting that its just the way the language is! (just like some things are just the way english is.... its the world of idioms... welcome and enjoy your stay! )

but in all seriouslynessment, if you only speak english, no problem. Just take what i said to heart. But i suggest getting friends on msn or in your town fast... it helps so much! l

hope i helped... and i would be willing to talk with you to help with whatever you need if you would like.

    Ha ha. Nice!

Yeah, I actually speak Canadian.. It's a weird form of english, eh. :P

Thanks for the advice Giovanni and others. I speak only english and a bit of french. I'm expecting Russian to be a totally alien thing for me with very little carry-over. So, yeah I know I'm in for a load of work.

As alot of the russian books and courses suggested, I sat down and figured out what I wanted to get out of learning russian. Basically, I want to be able to read it, and understand it on the TV, or wherever. I'm not really expecting or wanting to become a fluent speaker and travel there and learn how to talk it perfectly with no weird accent.

Mostly just reading and listening purposes. But, I'm sure learning to speak it to the best of my ability will help me understand the words better too, so I will also work on that.

oh you speak canadian eh? I am learning that language too!

but i forgot! if you just want to read, write, and speak (a little), go make an internet friend! I know parents always say it is not good to do, but for language, yes! You will learn how to read, write, and speak (watch tv for this, to speak and listening to pronounciation). It is really the best way... i learned portuguese by internet in 5 months, and now i read, speak, and understand almost everything i hear! (but it is close to my italian, so a little easier task than for your russian!)

I know what you wanted to say... but "to become" cannot be put into the past with "was" unless you say "it was becoming" (the past continuous). You can say "it did become certain", or "it became certain". But to say "it became certain" sounds much better! You usually say "it did become certain" when you have something after it. But in every case, it sounds ok to just say "it became"

And yeah! I don't think there is ANY way I could be a girl...
