WHICH ENGLISH-RUSSIAN ELECTRONIC DICTIONARY IS THE BEST?

I am looking for an English-Russian Electronic Dictionary. I have seen many online however all the reviews I keep reading, not are very good. Does anyone recommend a specific brand that works well and translates American English-Russian, visa versa? I sincerely appreciate everyones help.

    Try this one: http://www.lingvo.ru/lingvo/
    It is online.
I don't know if it is the best, but it is not bad at all.
In Russian, all nationalities and their corresponding languages start with a lower-case letter.

my hardback is the oxford which is pretty good, but i personally have developed a small fetish for the online lingvo dictionary
its off in some places, but all dictioneries are, the best bit for me tho is that is has russian dictionary entries so you can check the meaning (although the definition is in russian), check stress and see any synonyms.

Lingva is good value for the money, i.e. if you buy the desktop version, it's got a pretty nice interface plus it allows you to add custom dictionaries, which is neat. Online I'd also suggest you check out www.multitran.ru, they say its desktop version isn't really that good, for one it costs an arm and a leg so the primarily target big translation agencies, but the online version is free for all.
Now I don't suppose you'll be able to find a Russian/English dictionary that deals specifically with American English, I've never come across one myself but here I looked for the English equivalent for the Russian word капот (what I was looking for was what you guys call hood in the US and what the Brits sometimes refer to as the bonnet) and look at the results www.multitra.ru returned:
    http://www.multitran.ru/c/m.exe?l1=2&l2 ... 0%EF%EE%F2

There is only one bonnet and at least three hoods (plus a couple of cowls which probably mean engine cowlings on airplanes) so one might say it has an American bias.

    I highly recommend Lingvo.
I use "Lingvo 12 Multilingual Version" (128 dictionaries and 10 languages), it has many useful options. Also all Russian words in the Universal Ru-En dictionary (110 000 words) show stress (the stressed vowels are marked in red).

There are also "Lingvo 12 English version" and "Lingvo 12 European version" available.

You can download 1 month trial version from their site:

Увы, не все. В таблице "Формы слова" ударений нет. А не помешало бы в некоторых случаях. Боюсь, мне придётся покупать словарь трудностей.

you can see the stress in lingvo, get the word and uncheck the translation box and look at the russian entry and see it there. example - http://slovari.yandex.ru/search.xml?tex ... 1%81%D0%BA

I have just downloaded the Lingvo trial version and I'm starting to get very excited by it. If only it had sound files for pronouncing more Russian words I would probably buy it right now!

I notice that one of ABBEYY's other products is a piece of software which turns a scanned page into a text file. Presumably with this you could scan a page of a book or magazine and run it through an online interpreter. Has anyone tried this? Has anyone had any success?

Are you talking about ABBY FineReader? It's very popular here, a lot of people use it. The result depends on the quality of the scanned pages, but if they are decent (scan 300dpi in grey for the best result) you'll get OCR (text) pages in a few seconds/minutes (depending how many pages you have).
If the scan quality is bad (very low resolution, pencil marks over the text, ink spots, etc.) , you'll have to check the text after the operation is finished. Typos are possible ("l" instead of "i", for example), because FineReader won't be able to "see" some letters clearly.

The result can be exported to Word or other programs, and the format will be intact (if you chose this option), i.e. the font size, the position and size of pictures, tables, etc. will stay the same as on the original scanned page.

Overall it's very useful if you need to retype printed texts regulaly (from the books, for example). Everybody use FineReader for this task here, I use it for about 7 years too and quite happy with it.

PS. It's unable to recognize the handwritten text, though.

Thanks, I shall have to remember Finereader.

By the way my husband has noticed that the Lingvo dictionary captures keystrokes. He thinks it may include spyware and is unhappy about me having the trial version on the computer
Crying or Very sad. Does anyone know anything about this?

Mmm, I don't know about the keystrokes, but there's a file in the Lingvo folder that Antivirus software identifies as a potential thread (Invader/loader). It's LvAgent.exe. As far as I know it's not a virus/invader/whatever, at least nobody in the world proved it yet. The word is it's identified that way because of the virus-like style of the code-writing.

Anyway this file controls only the icon in your system tray and isn't very important. So they advise to delete it manually if you feel nervous and don't need that icon, it isn't supposed to affect the Dictionary usability.

I didn't check this theory, because I need this icon and I don't think it's a virus, and I'm afraid something will happen with my dear dictionary, if I delete it. But you may try, you have nothing to lose.

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Run
Send me a PM if you need me.
